[Njcea] Nominations for the Steven J. Rosen Mentor Award

Dear Friends of the New Jersey College English Association,

NJCEA is pleased to solicit nominees for the annual Steven J. Rosen Mentor Award.  This honor is a unique opportunity to recognize a member of our organization who has served as a mentor to faculty members, perhaps especially those who are beginning their careers.  Any colleague or student may nominate the individual.

Letters in support of the nomination should explain the qualities and accomplishments that have made this faculty member a significant mentor in our profession.  In particular, a letter should detail the nominee's ability to inspire students and colleagues as well as work creatively as a scholar/teacher.  In what ways has the nominee supported, advised, or rallied colleagues?  This mentor may show leadership ability in obvious areas (i.e., positions attained or posts held), but such skill may be equally apparent in a quiet, encouraging manner.

Since its inception in 1997, recipients of the award have included Mary Ellen Byrne, Professor of English at Ocean County College; Carole Shaffer-Koros, Dean of the School of Visual and Performing Arts at Kean University; Stephen Hahn, Associate Provost at William Paterson University; Santi Buscemi, Chair of the English Department at Middlesex County College; Mary Irby O'Reilly, Professor of English at Rider University; Judith Johnston, Director of Gender Studies at Rider University; Catarina Feldmann, Professor of English, William Paterson University, and Carol Hovanec, Professor of Literature, Ramapo College of New Jersey, Maria Devasconcelos Professor of English at Borough of Manhattan Community College, CUNY, and Chrysanthy Grieco, Associate Professor of English at Seton Hall University.

The award will be conferred at our 33rd annual spring conference on March 27, 2010, to be held this year at Seton Hall University (details can be found at njcea.org)..

Please send letters of endorsement for your nominee for the Rosen Award by February 22nd, to me at the address below (email is preferable-send to Kimmelman at njit.edu).  In addition, if possible please post the below announcement as a flyer where it may be seen.

This year we are especially pleased to have as our keynote speaker Dr. Elizabeth Nunez, internationally recognized scholar of Caribbean literature and award-winning novelist, Distinguished Professor and former Provost of Medgar Evers College, the City University of New York. Her talk is titled "What We Read and Teach: Is the Tale Wagging the Dog?"

Every year, the conference is an informative and pleasant gathering, and I'm sure this year's will be no different. The day's sessions will feature talks on literature, pedagogy, composition, and technology, as well as readings of creative writing. The conference registration form is available at the NJCEA website (njcea.org), and in case it is convenient for you I'm pasting it below (at the very bottom of this message, after the flyer advertising the Rosen Award).

Description of the Award

The Steven J. Rosen Mentor Award annually recognizes a college English professor and NJCEA member who has mentored colleagues.  This individual should have contributed to the profession beyond assigned teaching duties by demonstrating leadership, giving wise counsel, and providing extraordinary guidance.

Rules for Nominating Candidates

*        Only written nominations addressed to NJCEA will be considered.

*        The nomination should state how the candidate has served as a mentor to

            colleagues.

*              Any colleague, student, administrator, or friend may nominate the candidate.

*              Those submitting nominations need not be members of NJCEA.

*              Nominations must be submitted by February 22, 2010.

*              Final decisions on the award will be made by vote of the officers and trustees
            of NJCEA.
